Shelly Coyne

Singing as a driving force for change

Shelly Coyne is the community musician who leads and manages Gorbals-based project, Givin’ it Laldie. Originally from Devon, she has been gradually creeping her way up to Scotland, singing all the way. Shelly spent 18 years living in Lancaster, leading singing in Primary and Secondary schools, singing in bands and leading community groups before doing a MSc in Community Music at Edinburgh University. The Masters opened up new community music singing opportunities including setting up a women’s choir in Corton Vale Prison and working in a remote school in the mountains of Albania, researching the effect of learning English through songs.

A short trip to the North East landed her a spell at The Sage Gateshead, working for Sing Up as an Area Leader, and an opportunity to train adults working with young people and young people themselves to become effective and confident singing leaders. For now, though, life is definitely about Glasgow and the Gorbals and being part of an incredible project within a truly unique community.
