Creativities in Practice: Shaping the teaching and learning of music creatively
Karen Wise is currently a Research Associate in the AHRC Centre for Music Performance as Creative Practice based at the Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge. Prior to taking up this position in 2010, she was a Teaching Fellow in the School of Psychology, Keele University.
She is also a classical mezzo-soprano and singing teacher, holding a BA in Music (University of York, UK) and Postgraduate Diploma in Voice (Royal Northern College of Music). As a musician and psychologist, her research interests include cognitive processes in musical perception and performance, musical development and individual differences in musical ability.
In 2009, she gained a PhD in Psychology (2009) for her work examining the musical skills, cognitive profiles and self-perceptions of adults claiming to be 'tone deaf' in comparison to those with a musical neuro-cognitive disorder ('congenital amusia') and non-tone-deaf controls.
Her current work in CMPCP combines her interests in musical performance, development and abilities while considering the other end of the achievement spectrum in music. She still enjoys performing as a freelancer.
